Manhattan rises out of the dark, seen from a Greenwich Village rooftop where laundry lines and chimneys sit in shadow. The City from Greenwich Village shows John French Sloan looking north across his own neighborhood at the lights coming on below. The skyline burns amber against a deep blue-green sky, office windows lit one by one, the elevated rail and Sixth Avenue cutting through the middle distance.
