The Circus Horse

A circus horse fills the frame, painted by Pierre Bonnard in restless strokes of chestnut, crimson and gold, its mane whipped up as though the ring below is spinning. Bonnnard loved the circus, its boards and sawdust and gaslight, and here the animal becomes pure motion, the background dissolving into swirling bands of color that blur rider, ring and crowd. Brushwork stays loose and quick, close to the Nabis spirit, letting reds and yellows vibrate against deep shadow. Suits a den, a hallway, or any corner that could use a jolt of Belle Epoque energy.
