The Church of St. Gervais

The tower of St. Gervais rises over Paris rooftops, its gothic silhouette built from flickering strokes of grey, violet and pale ochre. Gustave Loiseau painted the church the way weather sees it, half dissolved in the haze of the Marais. Beneath the buttresses, small figures cross the square while slate roofs catch a thin, moving light. His crosshatched brushwork gives the stone a tremble, as if the whole facade were breathing through the smoke of the city. It suits a study, a hallway, or any quiet corner where the eye wants somewhere to climb.
