The Cathedral Rocks

Cathedral rocks rise from an Iona shoreline in this landscape by Samuel Peploe. The title names them plainly, and the painting earns it: the clustered granite forms read almost architectural against the sky. Peploe builds the mass out of squared planes of grey violet and slate, each facet edged in a darker line like dressed stone. Water breaks along the base in short strokes of white and viridian. Above, the sky sits in flat slabs of pale blue, pushing the rocks forward so they loom rather than recede. Grass at the foreground edge is a single emphatic note of green. A piece with this kind of structural weight suits a hallway or a room with high ceilings and little else on the walls, where the composition can hold its own.
