The Brown Crock

A squat brown crock sits at the center of the canvas, its glazed belly catching the light. Samuel Peploe builds the whole still life around it. The potter clay glows in shades of umber, sienna and burnt amber, brushed in short, confident strokes. Behind it, a folded cloth and a scattering of fruit hold the composition steady, each object weighed against the dark weight of the vessel.
