The Bridge and Schiehallion

A stone bridge spans the foreground, and behind it Schiehallion lifts its broad shoulders into a Perthshire sky. The Bridge and Schiehallion by John Duncan Fergusson sets Highland geology against human construction. Colour does the work here: blocks of violet and blue-green shadow the slopes, while patches of sunlit ochre break across the hillside like weather moving fast. The river below runs in quick strokes of teal and white, and the bridge masonry holds its greys against all that chromatic energy.
