The Bride, After Duchamp

A bride, rendered as Duchamp dreamed her: a mechanism of curved pans and suspended drapery rather than flesh. Jacques Villon translates his brother Marcel Duchamp's impossible figure into the language of engraving, all fine burin lines and silvery grays. Look closely and the crosshatching does the labor. Pale rods descend like jewelry, a skirt of metal hoops flares at the center, and drypoint fuzz softens every contour. Villon, himself a gifted etcher and Cubist, deepens the shadows so the bride seems to hover half drawn, half dissolved. Hung in a study or reading nook, it rewards slow looking.
