The Book of Old English Songs and Ballads

A robed minstrel leans over a great open songbook, quill raised, pages dense with medieval lettering and small painted vignettes of knights, greenwood, and riverbanks. Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale gave this frontispiece her full Pre-Raphaelite attention: jewel-toned pigment, fine brushwork, gold leaf catching the margins. Every figure sits inside its own illuminated frame, the way old ballad collections were once copied out by hand. Warm crimson and deep blue carry the palette, with burnished gold anchoring the border. It belongs in a study, a reading nook, or beside a shelf of well-worn poetry.
