The Book of Old English Songs and Ballads

A robed maiden kneels among scattered manuscript leaves, her hand resting on an open songbook as if mid verse. Eleanor Fortescue-Brickdale built the whole design around that moment of quiet recitation. Her watercolor surfaces glow with stained-glass intensity, deep rose and lapis against warm parchment grounds. Gold lettering curls through borders thick with oak leaves, lutes and small heraldic beasts. Finely drawn faces carry real feeling, mouths slightly parted on the first note. Every fold of drapery is modeled with the crisp shadows of Pre-Raphaelite draftsmanship. A reading nook or library wall suits this ballad imagery best, close to shelves and lamplight.
