The Boat

A small boat rests on water the color of crushed grapes, its hull catching violet and orange reflections from a harbor Valtat never bothers to detail. Louis Valtat painted The Boat with the thick, unblended strokes that made him a forerunner of Fauvism, letting pigment do the work of description. Look at how the paint sits. Dabs of viridian and cerulean chop the surface into ripples, while the mast tilts against a sky built from buttery yellows and salmon pink. Nothing is outlined. Form arrives through color pushed against color, wet into wet, the way Mediterranean light actually behaves at midday. Suited to a sunroom, a coastal hallway, or above a writing desk where a window faces the sea.
