The Blue Lamp

A blue lamp glows at the center of the room, its cobalt shade throwing cool light across the figure seated beneath it. The Blue Lamp by John Duncan Fergusson turns an ordinary interior into a study of color and shadow. Deep blues dominate, cut with warm flesh tones and flashes of orange in the background. Fergusson, the Scottish Colourist, builds the scene from thick, confident strokes of paint, letting the lamp light pool over the table and dissolve the edges of the room into loose, breathing color.
