The Blossoming Field

A meadow in full bloom runs to the very top of the frame. In The blossoming field, Felix Vallotton lets flowers overtake the picture plane, dotting green ground with points of white, pink and yellow. The paint sits thick and deliberate. Blossoms read as small dabs, almost stitches, scattered across grass rendered in layered greens. Behind them a band of darker foliage closes the scene, so the field feels bounded and intimate rather than endless. Singular in his refusal to soften a scene, Vallotton gives spring a quiet order.
