About this work

The Blacksmith’s Courtyard

A forge burns at the center of a walled city yard. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky builds The Blacksmith’s Courtyard around that one hot point of orange, everything else sinking into cool brown and grey shadow. Rooflines climb steeply on every side, timber and plaster pressing inward over the workers below. Figures bend at the anvil, a cart waits by the gate, and bare branches scratch across a narrow wedge of sky. Ink line and wash give the cobbles and leaning sheds their slightly haunted, theatrical precision. Suited to a study, hallway, or reading corner where Old World city atmosphere and craft imagery set the tone.
