The Bank of Shinobazu Pond

Willows lean over the water at Shinobazu, their long fronds trailing toward a bank scattered with reeds and lotus leaves. Fujishima Takeji paints the pond edge in layered greens, letting each blade and stem register as its own deliberate brushstroke. Sunlight settles on the surface in pale yellow flecks, and a soft grey sky holds the whole scene in quiet balance. The reflections waver between blue and jade, broken only where the reeds cut through. A study, a reading nook, or a hallway with morning light would give this view of the pond the calm wall it deserves.
