The Avenue

Trees line both sides and recede toward a bright opening at the center. The Avenue by Alice Bailly turns an ordinary walkway into a study of rhythm and depth, each trunk placed with deliberate spacing so the eye travels straight through the scene. Bailly worked in the language of early modernism, and the picture shows it: flattened planes of foliage, simplified trunks in dark umber, and a ground built from layered strokes of ochre and sap green. Light filters through the canopy in broken patches, and the perspective narrows with an almost geometric discipline that reflects her experiments alongside the cubist painters of her generation. Hang it where lines of sight run long, a hallway or stair landing, so the receding avenue carries the viewer forward.
