The Auxerre Cathedral

The cathedral of Auxerre rises above rooftops in this Gustave Loiseau view, its gothic tower lifting into a pale, moving sky. Loiseau builds the stone facade out of short, feathered strokes, greys and creams broken by touches of violet where shadow pools under the buttresses. Below, slate roofs and chimney stacks cluster tightly, painted with the same quick, en plein air touch he brought to every French town he recorded. Light rakes across the masonry at an angle, so one flank glows while the other sits in cool half tone. A study, hallway, or reading corner with quiet architectural taste is the natural setting for a composition this measured.
