The Abersee

A dark alpine lake fills the frame in The Abersee, Koloman Moser rendering the water as a single deep band beneath a pale sky. Moser was the Viennese designer who cofounded the Wiener Werkstätte, and his landscapes treat nature as pattern. Deep teal water occupies most of the surface, its flat tone broken by pale highlights where light skims the swell. Hills rise in muted mauve and grey at the far shore. The brushwork stays even and deliberate, the horizon set high. The Abersee is the older name for Lake Wolfgang in the Salzkammergut, a favorite summer retreat for Viennese artists. It suits a study or reading room, somewhere quiet.
