Terrace in Vvedensk

A veranda of weathered boards looks out over birches and unmown summer grass, everything caught in quick, sun-flecked strokes. Terrace in Vvedensk shows Valentin Serov painting from under the eaves, half inside the scene himself. Ochre light breaks across the floorboards in patches, sage green foliage presses close on both sides, and white birch trunks stand like pale columns at the edge of the shade.
