Tennis Game by the Sea

Two players trade a ball across a grass court, the sea pressing close behind them. Edouard Vuillard captures Tennis Game by the Sea with his characteristic compression, figures and coastline pushed into one shallow, animated plane. The palette runs on sea-glass greens and sandy violets, brushwork dappled and restless across the court surface. Nets, rackets and pale summer clothing register as quick gestures rather than detail, while the water beyond holds a flatter, cooler band of color. Everything feels close, almost domestic, despite the open horizon. A sunroom or stairway landing would suit it, somewhere with morning light and enough quiet around it for the brushwork to breathe.
