Tengerpart Liguria 1933

Bathers cluster at the waterline of a Ligurian shore, parasols tilted against the midday glare while sailboats tack across a blue that deepens toward the horizon. Tengerpart Liguria 1933 belongs to the late seaside period of Vaszary Janos, the Hungarian master who spent summers on the Riviera and let its light reorder his palette. His brushwork here is quick and loaded, laid down in short dabs of turquoise, sand yellow and shell pink so the water seems to shiver where it meets the beach. Figures dissolve into gesture, color doing the work of drawing. It belongs in a sunlit living room or a stairway hall where the sea tones can carry the wall.
