Tenger

Open water runs unbroken to the horizon in Tenger, a seascape by Hungarian painter Vaszary János, where swell and sky meet along a single low line. Short loaded strokes of cobalt, teal and slate build the swell, each crest picked out in cream where light catches it. Dabs of white suggest sailboats far off, small against all that moving water. The brushwork stays loose, wet, rapid. Hung it where light shifts through the day: a stairwell, a bedroom with linen and pale wood, or beside a reading chair set well back from the window.
