Temple in Skvernitsy

Temple walls of weathered fieldstone settle into the clearing at Skvernitsy, ringed by dark firs under a thin northern sky. Nicholas Roerich sets the old sanctuary low against the land. The paint sits matte and chalky, broad flat strokes of ochre, moss green and slate laying the ground in quiet planes. Crooked crosses crown a shingled roof, shadow pools violet beneath the eaves, and a worn path fades into grass at the edge of view. Hung in a study or reading nook, its hushed greens and greys slow the eye, lending a quiet corner the stillness of a forest clearing at dusk.
