About this work

Temple in Naggar

A timber pagoda temple climbs the hillside at Naggar, its tiered roofs stacked against the Kullu Valley haze. Nicholas Roerich painted this Himalayan shrine during his years in the western foothills, when the mountain gods felt close enough to touch. Cobalt shadow pools beneath the eaves while warm ochre light catches the wooden balconies and carved doorframes. Deodar trunks frame the composition at left, their needles rendered in short, dry strokes. Behind everything, the snowline of the greater range burns pale gold where the sun breaks through cloud. Set it in a study or reading nook where quiet evenings suit its contemplative register.
