Tavaszi Táj

Spring arrives in a Hungarian landscape: thawed fields stretch toward low hills, young green breaking through the brown of winter soil. Tavaszi Táj, Scheiber Hugó, catches the season at its first honest hour. Scheiber builds the scene from stacked planes of color. Leafy tops in yellow green press against trunks of slate and violet, hedgerows run in ribbons of ochre, and a pale sky holds everything loosely at the horizon. The brushwork stays visible and structural, each field of pigment doing the work of a furrow or a branch. Hung in a sunlit kitchen or a hallway with white plaster walls, the green carries the whole room forward.
