Tarbagatai

Rounded foothills of the Tarbagatai range roll across the picture plane, their crests brushed in cold violet against a pale, high sky. Nicholas Roerich builds the whole scene from broad tempera planes, layering mauve, slate and ochre until each ridge reads like stacked slabs of stone. Thin light catches the farthest slopes, while the foreground stays matte and earthen, crosshatched where shadow gathers in the hollows. A stillness settles over the steppe, broken by nothing human.
