Adobe dwellings of Taos Pueblo, New Mexico, gather under a wide sky in this Nicholas Roerich composition. Terraced mud-brick walls step down in warm ochre and umber, their soft edges dissolving into the blue-violet of late afternoon shadow. Roerich renders the multi-storied pueblo as a single sculptural mass, ladders leaning against upper tiers, timber vigas tracing dark horizontal lines across the sunbaked surfaces.
