Tablets of Law

Two stone tablets descend before a robed figure in Nicholas Roerich Tablets of Law, the revelation scene rendered in the painters unmistakable Himalayan register. Cool mineral blues flood the sky above a bare summit. Edges of the mountain cut hard against pale light. Roerich paints the lawgiver small against the slope, arms raised toward the descending tablets, their surfaces catching a cooler, brighter tone than the rock around them. Thin veils of white and lilac cloud cross the midground, and the foreground grades into deep indigo shadow, the brushwork broad and dry, almost fresco-like in its flatness of color. Suits a study, library, or quiet hallway where contemplative mountain imagery can hold the wall alone.
