Synagogue

A wooden synagogue rises at the end of a narrow street, drawn by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky in ink and wash. The building leans slightly, its steep roof and boarded walls rendered in quick, sure strokes of grey and sepia. Look closely and the crosshatching does the work: smoke curls from a chimney, a fence tilts, small figures pause at the doorway. The wash pools dark in the shadows under the eaves and thins to pale ochre where sunlight catches the timber. Dobuzhinsky memorialized these vanished wooden synagogues of the Lithuanian shtetl with an elegiac tenderness. A quiet presence in a study, reading nook, or hallway. Note: this reproduction uses a carefully color-matched reproduction of the original ink wash, on your choice of archival paper or canvas.
