Sword-Lillies

Blossoms like blades. Gheorghe Petrascu gives the sword-lily its true character here, the tall flower stalks rising upright and pointed, each blossom opening along the stem like a row of sharpened white petals waiting its turn. The palette runs through deep viridian and bottle green, the foliage painted in loaded, deliberate strokes that still hold the ridges of the brush. Cream and ivory petals catch the light against a darker ground, the stems crossing at steep angles so the whole arrangement feels architectural, almost heraldic. The surface carries the weight of thick oil paint, visible in every impasted leaf edge and petal fold. A dining room or hallway with pale plaster walls gives these upright blooms the contrast they were painted for.
