Bathers wade into water gone to hammered gold under the afternoon sun, shoulders catching hard light off the surface. Swimming in the afternoon. (The Sun) holds that languid hour before evening cool. Konchalovsky builds the scene in heavy impasto: water chopped into slabs of cobalt and white, the sun flared to a white-hot disc, skin laid down in planes of pink ochre and umber. Shadows go violet where bodies meet the shimmer. A sunroom, a stair landing, a lakeside cottage hallway: anywhere the afternoon already pours in, the picture answers it stroke for stroke.
