Sweetpeas and Butterflies

Sweetpeas climb a slender bamboo stake while two butterflies hover at the blooms. Takahashi renders the whole scene in the clean, decisive language of Japanese woodblock design. Ink sits flat and confident on the paper surface. The petals carry a pale wash of mauve and shell pink, petals curling at the lip in that unmistakable sweetpea silhouette. Fine line work traces each vein in the leaves, and the butterflies, one open winged, one at rest, bring a small pulse of movement to an otherwise still composition. Generous negative space keeps the arrangement airy, a hallmark of the shin hanga floral tradition.
