Sweetheart Abbey

Grey stone rises above the trees in Sweetheart Abbey, Samuel Peploe taking the ruin head on. The tower stands square against a pale sky, its weathered sandstone built up in blocks of slate blue and warm grey. Peploe structures the scene with his usual discipline. Deep shadow cuts across the abbey walls in strong blocks of indigo, while sunlight catches the buttresses in chalky cream and dusty rose. The grass in the foreground glows a saturated green, laid down in firm, deliberate strokes that flatten the meadow into pattern. Clouds sweep overhead in thick sweeps of white and lilac, echoing the geometry of the stonework below. A landscape like this suits a hallway or study, where its cool greys and clean composition can hold a wall on their own.
