Sunset on the River

Sunlight pools across the water in Louis Aston Knight Sunset on the River, the last warmth of the day laid flat against a slow current. Knight paints the hour when rivers turn to brass. Every brushstroke follows the drift of light. Low on the horizon, the sky burns in apricot and rose, its color doubling on the surface so the water seems lit from below. Dark tree masses anchor the near bank, their silhouettes edged in molten rim light, while the far shore dissolves into soft violet haze. Reflections streak the current in broken ribbons of gold and salmon, interrupted by darker shallows. This riverside glow settles naturally into a dining room or a quiet sitting room that faces west.
