Sunset

The sun drops behind a sawtooth ridge and Nicholas Roerich holds that final burning minute in Sunset, a Himalayan twilight where snowfields keep the fire long after the valley has gone violet. Tempera gives the sky its chalky intensity: vermilion and orange band above a small molten sun disc, while the snow peaks turn cold rose against deep ultramarine shadow. Darkened foothills close the foreground, their ridgelines flattened almost to black where the light has already failed. It suits a study or reading nook facing west, where evening light answers the painted one, or an entryway that greets guests with high mountain air.
