Sunset

The sun drops behind a mountain ridge and the whole sky catches fire in Nicholas Roerich's Sunset. Above the dark silhouette of peaks, cloud bands shift from deep crimson to molten orange, thinning into pale gold at the top of the composition. The terrain below stays cool and shadowed, so the burning horizon reads twice as hot. Roerich builds the glow in layered tempera veils, each pass of pigment softening the edge between light and rock. A quiet evening tone settles over everything, suited to a bedroom, a hallway, or any room that faces west.
