Sunset, Lake Simcoe

The sun drops low over Lake Simcoe, burning a channel of orange across the water. MacDonald sets the whole sky against it, from sulfurous yellow at the horizon to a deep violet gathering overhead. Dark treeline runs along the far shore like ink, broken where light spills through a gap in the trees. Clouds ride high, their bellies lit coral and gold while their undersides stay cool grey and blue. The brushwork is broad and loaded, sky and lake pushed around with thick, confident strokes. Canadian landscape painting at full evening power. Hang it in a study, a stairwell, or any room that faces west.
