Sunset

The sun sits low over a darkening sea, its last light smeared across water in bands of amber, rose, and deep violet. Kimon Loghi titles the work simply Sunset. The sky does most of the talking. Brushwork in the heavens moves horizontally, pulled thin like wet silk, while the water below catches broken reflections in short, loaded strokes of gold and crimson. A horizon line divides the surface into two temperatures: the burning upper half and the cooler, purple-shadowed sea. Pigment sits thick at the sun itself, a small furnace dissolving into the haze. A quiet study, a bedroom facing east, or a hallway that catches evening light would hold this seascape well.
