Sunset Glow

Last light burns across the high Sierra in Guy Rose's Sunset Glow, a California plein air landscape where the whole mountainside seems lit from within. Rose worked in oil, laying broad impasto strokes of vermilion and rose madder over cool violet shadow, letting the granite peaks hold the days final heat. The sky shifts from apricot near the ridgeline to deep lavender above, while dark pines anchor the foreground in near silhouette. His brushwork stays loose and broken, the hallmark of American Impressionism filtered through Giverny, so color does all the descriptive work. Hang it where evening light can answer it, a dining room, a hallway above a console, anywhere that welcomes the warm end of the day.
