Sunset

The sun drops low over a wide northern water, and the whole sky answers in molten orange and rose. Sunset is Rylov at his most lyrical. Look closely and the brushwork carries the heat: short loaded strokes of vermilion and gold laid across the horizon, their glow reflected in broken dashes of amber on the darkening river below. Silhouetted banks hold the composition steady, painted in deep violet and umber so the burning sky has something to push against. A dining room or lounge facing west suits this kind of evening light, where the glow reads strongest at day close.
