Sunrise (Toba, Mount Asama)

Daybreak lifts the sheltered bay into burnished copper while Mount Asama keeps its dark silhouette against the glow, the scene Fujishima Takeji set down in Sunrise (Toba, Mount Asama). Oil pigment laid in broad, wet strokes turns the water into one sheet of fire, a pale path of light running from the horizon toward the shore. Fishing boats rest at anchor as dark flecks while the headland below the peak holds a band of violet shadow.
