Sunrise the Sea

A low sun lifts itself out of open water in Sunrise the Sea, painted by Fujishima Takeji. The horizon sits low and wide, letting sky dominate the field. Silver and rose light scatter across the swell in broken vertical strokes, each wave crest catching a separate gleam. The sky grades from pale lemon near the waterline into soft grey blue overhead, all handled in smooth oil paint with barely a visible brushmark. Mist thins where the disc of the sun burns through.
