Sunrise (Sunrise in Taiwan)

Tall grass on a Taiwanese hillside catches first light, every blade drawn in quick oil strokes tipped with gold. Fujishima Takeji titled the scene plainly and then painted the sky as if it were molten, rose bleeding into apricot above a horizon still cool and blue. Lower down the slopes stay in shadow, muted greens and umbers that push the dawn higher and hotter by contrast. Clouds drag long, soft bands of coral across the upper register, their undersides lit while their bodies remain grey. A small canvas of pure morning, it suits a sunroom, stair landing, or breakfast nook where the day begins.
