Sunrise over the Eastern Sea

The sun breaks the horizon of the eastern sea, a molten disc balanced on water that has not yet decided between silver and gold. Fujishima Takeji gives the first minutes of morning their full weight, holding the moment before the day begins in earnest. Light moves across the surface in long, level bands, each wave catching a different temperature of color. Rose and apricot thin into pale lemon near the zenith, while the sea below keeps a deep, cool violet. The horizon line sits low, leaving most of the picture to sky, and the brushwork loosens where water meets light, wet color blended wet. A quiet study or a bedroom facing east suits it well. Hang it where morning light can answer the painted one.
