Five peaks cut the horizon at daybreak, and Fujishima Takeji records the exact minute the light turns. Sunrise over Mount Goken sets a jagged ridge against a sky just waking. Oil paint carries the drama in a handful of tones: vermilion bleeding into rose along the cloud line, the ridgeline held in cool indigo, the valley below still grey and undecided. The Japanese yoga brushwork is deliberate, short firm strokes giving the peaks their craggy edge while the sky is smoothed almost bare.
