Sunrise over Mongolia

The Mongolian steppe opens flat and enormous beneath a rising sun. Fujishima Takeji painted that opening hour, when the horizon line burns orange and the grassland below still holds its night blue. Low hills ripple across the middle distance in muted violet and grey green. Above them the sky climbs through bands of apricot, rose madder and pale gold, the sun itself a small pale disc just clearing the land. The brushwork stays smooth and atmospheric, the western oil manner Takeji absorbed while studying in Europe, applied here to an East Asian subject that few Japanese painters of his generation attempted. A study or hallway with plain walls suits it, somewhere the long horizon can breathe.
