Sunrise on Yushan

First sun clears the crest of Yushan and the whole eastern face ignites, a sunrise scene Fujishima Takeji built from graduated bands of dawn color. Below the peak, a sea of cloud lies flat and pearl grey, broken only by darker ridgelines. The sky moves from vermilion at the horizon through rose to pale lemon. Short loaded strokes of oil pigment give the rock its granular texture, each facet catching a different temperature of light. Hung in a study or reading nook, the cold blues of the shaded mountain balance warm plaster walls and low evening lamplight.
