Sunrise

The sun rises in flat discs of gold and ochre, hung one above the other like notes on a staff. Ciurlionis titled it Sunrise and painted dawn the way a composer writes a crescendo. Below, a mountain ridge dissolves into layered bands of pale blue and silver, each slope farther away and fainter than the last. Bells or towers emerge faintly from the haze, their forms thinning as the light strengthens. Tempera-like surfaces carry a soft, chalky grain, and the horizon sits low, leaving the upper half to that strange stacked sun. Suited to a bedroom or a quiet reading nook where morning light meets it halfway.
