Sunrise — Framed Poster

The sun climbs above the horizon in a single unbroken blaze, and Fujishima Takeji meets it head on in Sunrise. Nothing else in the picture matters once that disc clears the water. Painted in the western-style manner Takeji helped establish in Japan, the scene reads first as pure light. Look at how the color is built. Deep indigo water sits beneath a sky that warms from violet grey into saffron and coral, each band brushed wet into the next so the edges never harden.
