Sunrise — Canvas

Low sun rides a band of water at daybreak. Fujishima Takeji painted this seascape at the hour when light turns the horizon to molten copper and the sea still holds the darkness beneath. The title says everything about its subject. Look at how the pigment is laid down. Broad horizontal strokes of rose gold and pale amber build the sky in layers, while the water below carries deeper notes of slate and violet where night has not fully surrendered. A low disc of orange burns at the horizon line, its reflection dragged across the swell in broken streaks of vermilion. The brushwork stays loose and atmospheric, closer to the tonalist manner he absorbed than to precise academic rendering. Hang it where morning light can answer it, a stairwell landing or the wall above a writing desk.
