Sunrise — Canvas

The sun climbs above the horizon in a single unbroken blaze, and Fujishima Takeji meets it head on in Sunrise. Nothing else in the picture matters once that disc clears the water. Painted in the western-style manner Takeji helped establish in Japan, the scene reads first as pure light. Look at how the color is built. Deep indigo water sits beneath a sky that warms from violet grey into saffron and coral, each band brushed wet into the next so the edges never harden. The reflection stretches down in a broken column of vermilion and gold, wobbling where the surface stirs. No boats, no shore, no figures. Just atmosphere handled with an oil painters patience and a Japanese sense of restraint. It belongs above a low console in an entryway, or across from a window in a quiet reading room where morning light can answer it.
